Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic misalignments, called malocclusions, can be inherited or acquired. Some that are inherited include jaw growth problems, congenitally missing teeth, extra teeth, crowded or protruded teeth and spacing problems. However, the premature loss of baby teeth, habits such as thumb sucking, accidents and dental disease can also result in a need for orthodontic treatment.
An orthodontist is a specialist dentist who has completed 2 - 3 years of full-time post-graduate study in the diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic problems at a recognised University. While they are also trained as a dentist, a specialist orthodontist does not normally carry out routine dental treatment such as fillings or extractions. They spend all of their time doing just orthodontics, making them the perfect choice to straighten teeth and correct improper bites.
Treatment costs depend on a number of factors such as the type of appliances used, the severity of the problem(s) and the length of treatment. At OrthoSouth we believe that everyone is entitled to know their options and if you are under 18 years, your first consultation is FREE. At your first visit we are happy to provide you with an estimate for the likely costs of planning and treatment going forwards.
Treatment length varies depending on the presenting problems. Your orthodontist will be happy to give you an idea of treatment time once they have assessed your teeth and jaws in clinic.
Treatment can happen at any age. We would recommend seeing an orthodontist for the first time between the ages of 8 and 10 years, or even sooner a referral has been made or you would like advice. It is never too late for orthodontic treatment. We have a range of more discrete treatment options that may appeal to adults and children alike.
No referral is necessary. Just give us a call to arrange your first consultation.
